# Crawl Depth

**Category:** SEO Crawling & Indexation | **Updated:** 2026-03-05

Crawl depth is the number of clicks or links a crawler must follow from the homepage to reach a specific page, with deeper pages being less likely to be crawled and indexed.

---

## What Is Crawl Depth?
Crawl depth measures how many links a crawler must follow from the site's homepage to reach a given page. A page linked directly from the homepage has a depth of 1. A page only reachable through two intermediate pages has a depth of 3. Generally, the deeper a page is, the less frequently it gets crawled.

## Why Crawl Depth Matters for SEO
Search engines treat page depth as a signal of importance. Pages at depth 1-2 are considered more important and get crawled more frequently. Pages buried at depth 5+ may be crawled infrequently or not at all. Your most important content should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage.

## How to Optimize Crawl Depth
Flatten your site architecture by linking to important pages from your homepage or main navigation. Use internal linking strategies to bring deep content closer to the surface. Use [CrawlBeast](/crawler/) to map your site's crawl depth and identify orphan pages or deeply buried content.
