# Crawl Trap

**Category:** SEO Crawling & Indexation | **Updated:** 2026-03-05

A crawl trap is a URL structure that causes crawlers to get stuck in an infinite or near-infinite loop of pages, wasting crawl budget on auto-generated, low-value URLs.

---

## What Is a Crawl Trap?
A crawl trap is any URL pattern that generates an effectively infinite number of pages, causing search engine crawlers to waste their crawl budget on worthless content. Common examples include calendar widgets that generate URLs for every day into the future, search result pages with crawlable URLs, and infinitely nested category/filter combinations.

## Why Crawl Traps Are Dangerous
Crawl traps can consume your entire crawl budget, preventing search engines from finding and indexing your actual content. A single calendar widget generating URLs for every day from 2000 to 2099 creates 36,500 useless URLs. Googlebot may spend days crawling these instead of your product pages.

## How to Identify and Fix Crawl Traps
Crawl your site with [CrawlBeast](/crawler/) and look for URL patterns that generate thousands of similar pages. Block crawl traps via robots.txt Disallow rules. Add `noindex` to pages that should not be indexed.
